Teams Copilot call delegation
- Microsoft pushed Copilot beyond meeting recaps with a call-delegation feature that lets delegates answer calls for consultants. - The system inserts Copilot-generated recaps and follow-up details into Teams' Call app for consultant review. - The feature moves Copilot into telephony workflow automation and missed-call triage, changing how calls are handled in Teams. Microsoft is moving Copilot from meeting notes into phone calls, with a new Teams feature that can answer and triage calls for a user before deciding what happens next. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) Microsoft announced the feature on April 21, 2026, in a Teams blog post that described Copilot as a voice agent for call delegation. The company said Copilot can screen calls, collect the caller’s reason, route urgent calls through, and suggest follow-up steps afterward. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) In Microsoft’s support documentation, the feature works inside Teams Phone and supports both Voice over Internet Protocol and public switched telephone network calls. Microsoft said it is currently available through the Microsoft 365 Copilot Frontier program and supported on Windows desktop, Mac desktop, and the web, but not on iOS or Android. (support.microsoft.com) Call delegation itself is not new in Teams. Microsoft has long let one employee share a phone line with a delegate who can receive and make calls on that person’s behalf, a setup the company also describes as shared line appearance. (support.microsoft.com, learn.microsoft.com) What changed is who does the first pass. Instead of a human assistant or delegate answering every call, Copilot can now pick up, ask why the person is calling, and either pass the call through, send it to voicemail, or offer a booking option through Microsoft Bookings when the call is not urgent. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) Microsoft said the consultant or employee later sees Copilot-generated recaps in the Calls app in Teams, including the reason for the call and suggested next steps. During screening, the user also gets a banner notification and can join the call from call history at any time. (techcommunity.microsoft.com, support.microsoft.com) Microsoft’s examples target jobs where missed calls can carry a cost, including supply chain managers, sales directors, and consultants moving between meetings. In those examples, Copilot routes a delayed-shipment call as urgent, filters out a spam call, and schedules a callback with a prospect without interrupting the user. (techcommunity.microsoft.com) The release also pushes Copilot deeper into Teams Phone, an area Microsoft has been expanding with delegation and shared-call handling features over the past two years. In January 2025, Microsoft rolled out collaborative call delegation on Teams Phone devices, extending the company’s effort to automate and spread call-handling work across groups. (m365admin.handsontek.net, support.microsoft.com) For Microsoft, the pitch is fewer interruptions without losing context. For users, the test will be whether callers accept talking to an artificial intelligence gatekeeper before they reach a person. (techcommunity.microsoft.com, support.microsoft.com)
