Artisan support programs

Several initiatives are promoting local artisans: Jammu & Kashmir launched a 'Know Your Artisan' push to strengthen handloom and handicraft design and infrastructure, NRLM highlighted 'Umeed' pine‑needle handicrafts made by women SHGs, and AMMACHI Labs reported training women in stitching and embroidery. These programs aim to build production skills and market visibility for rural and artisan groups ((x.com); (x.com); AMMACHI Labs).

Local governments and nonprofit trainers in India are pairing artisan branding with skills programs as they push rural women and craft workers toward bigger markets. (devdiscourse.com) In Jammu and Kashmir, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched the “Know Your Artisan” program at Kashmir Haat on April 15, 2026, under the Handicrafts and Handloom Department’s “Soulful Kashmir” campaign. He also directed the department to make the program a regular feature. (devdiscourse.com) The Jammu and Kashmir department says its work already includes training centers, design support through its School of Design, artisan and weaver credit-card support, and exhibitions and trade fairs meant to create market links. The department’s website lists about 20 varieties of textile, non-textile, floor-covering, and handloom arts under its mandate. (dohh.jk.gov.in) In Rajouri district, the National Rural Livelihoods Mission program known locally as “Umeed” now includes about 9,000 members across 1,100 self-help groups, according to Block Programme Manager Aftab Ahmad in remarks published April 15, 2026. He said women in the program are making handicrafts from chir pine needles collected locally. (newsable.asianetnews.com) Ahmad said the pine-needle products use raw material women gather while taking livestock out for grazing, then wash, dry, and stitch at home with needle and thread. One participant, Aarti, said the scheme reached her village in 2014 and that 100 to 150 women are now working alongside her. (newsable.asianetnews.com) The National Rural Livelihoods Mission is a central government poverty-alleviation program that organizes rural women into self-help groups tied to finance and livelihoods. In Rajouri, that structure is being used to turn low-cost local material into saleable craft goods. (newsable.asianetnews.com) AMMACHI Labs, a research and outreach center at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, says its work focuses on skill development, women’s empowerment, and rural technologies. The center reports programs in villages across India and publishes regular updates on women’s livelihood training. (ammachilabs.org) One recent example came in Garhani, Bihar, where AMMACHI Labs said nine women from Morasia village took part in a seven-day uniform-stitching program from August 1 to 7, 2025. Five were selected for the next phase and received official stitching orders after a practical assessment. (ammachilabs.org) Across these programs, the pattern is the same: attach a product to a worker, teach a marketable skill, and create a route to buyers through fairs, orders, or branding. That leaves the next test in whether these efforts produce steady repeat income, not just one-off visibility. (dohh.jk.gov.in; devdiscourse.com; ammachilabs.org)
