Brooklyn Gallery Scene
Joe Bertino’s solo exhibit, “Thaw Pieces,” opens at Thomas VanDyke Gallery in Brooklyn from March 12-22 [https://events.brooklynpaper.com/event/joe-bertino-thaw-pieces-at-thomas-vandyke-gallery/], offering a look into Brooklyn's indie art scene.
Bertino's "Thaw Pieces" features 18 collage works using Art Deco artifacts to represent organic regeneration. Vases and thermoses are reimagined to symbolize new life emerging after winter. The exhibit marks a stylistic shift for Bertino, moving towards minimalism with restrained and tranquil compositions. Unlike his previous densely layered works, "Thaw Pieces" uses fewer source materials and simpler cuts. Thomas VanDyke Gallery, established in 2022, is located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. The gallery focuses on showcasing local NYC artists and creatives from around the world. The gallery also hosts live performances, workshops, and community events. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, March 14th, at 2 PM, with roundtable discussions with the artist on March 15th and 22nd. "Thaw Pieces" draws inspiration from an "American Modern" catalog of Art Deco household goods from 1925-1940.
