Persistent Logouts Plague WhatsApp Web Users
Users are reporting recurring forced logouts on WhatsApp Web, causing significant operational friction for businesses managing customer support and orders. While partly linked to new security mandates in India, ongoing technical issues appear to be compounding the problem, disrupting daily workflows for multi-device users.
The mandatory six-hour logout for WhatsApp Web users in India is a direct result of new "SIM binding" rules from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which came into effect on March 1, 2026. This is a deliberate security measure, not a technical glitch, aimed at curbing cyber fraud by ensuring the registered SIM is physically present in the primary phone. The regulation requires messaging apps like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram to continuously verify the SIM's presence, forcing re-authentication for linked devices. Beyond the Indian mandate, a separate technical issue recently surfaced, primarily affecting iPhone users globally. Users reported getting stuck on the "Loading your chats" screen or receiving "Couldn't link device" errors when trying to sync their phones with the web client, a problem some analysts have linked to a potential bug in a recent iOS app update. These operational hurdles coincide with a period of intense regulatory scrutiny for Meta in India. The Supreme Court has issued strong warnings to the company regarding its data-sharing practices between WhatsApp and other Meta platforms. The court is examining a case stemming from a Competition Commission of India (CCI) finding that Meta abused its dominant market position with its 2021 "take-it-or-leave-it" privacy policy. This regulatory pressure is shaping WhatsApp's product roadmap for businesses in India. The company is expanding its conversational commerce tools, rolling out features like WhatsApp Flows for custom interactions and enabling in-app payment collections through partnerships with Razorpay and PayU. However, there are also new restrictions, such as a 2026 policy update that prohibits the use of general-purpose AI chatbots, limiting AI to specific functions like customer support and order processing. For businesses, the multi-device feature's reliability remains a key concern, with some users reporting message synchronization bugs between devices since its rollout. Common causes for unexpected logouts, aside from the new regulations, include having too many active sessions, outdated app versions, insufficient phone memory, or inactivity for over 14 days, which can trigger an encryption key update and terminate the session.
