‘Coolcation’ push to Nordic and Greenland
Tour operators are packaging cooler, experience‑led summers: HX unveiled new 2026–27 Greenland programs focused on culinary 'Tide to Table' dining and South Greenland wilderness immersion (travelandtourworld.com). Meanwhile Gulf travelers are reportedly shifting toward Norway, Iceland and Finland for summer trips where daytime temperatures typically sit around 15–22°C (blog.wego.com).
Travel companies are selling summer heat relief as a product, steering 2026 and 2027 travelers toward Greenland and the Nordic countries. (travelhx.com) HX Expeditions said on April 14 that it is expanding Greenland programs from June 2026 through the 2027 season, with new trips built around local food and South Greenland wilderness experiences. The company said the lineup was developed with Greenlandic community partners. (travelhx.com) HX said its Greenlandic culinary program, launched in 2025, will return on nine 2026 sailings aboard the *MS Fram*, *MS Roald Amundsen*, *MS Spitsbergen* and *MS Fridtjof Nansen*. The program includes a four-course tasting menu by chef Inunnguaq Hegelund and sourcing from Greenlandic suppliers including Neqi A/S, Royal Greenland and Qajaq Brewery. (travelhx.com) At the same time, travel sellers are pitching Norway, Iceland and Finland as summer alternatives to southern Europe. Wego said on April 15 that travelers from the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar are choosing Nordic trips with summer temperatures around 10 to 22 degrees Celsius and up to 24 hours of daylight. (blog.wego.com) The shift follows another year of heat-driven travel warnings in Europe. Euronews reported in March that car rental company Sixt expects travel to Scandinavia to rise by as much as 35% in 2026 as travelers avoid heat waves, wildfires and crowding in countries including Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal. (euronews.com) The weather pitch is real, but it is not uniform. Visit Norway says summer temperatures can reach 25 to 30 degrees Celsius in the south and inland valleys, while Visit Finland says Helsinki summers regularly hit 25 degrees Celsius and midnight sun runs through June and July. (visitnorway.com) (visitfinland.com) Iceland is cooler on average, but it is also less predictable. Guide to Iceland says average summer temperatures are about 11 degrees Celsius, with roughly 21 hours of daylight by late June and frequent swings between sun, rain and wind in a single day. (guidetoiceland.is) Greenland’s tourism industry is also growing beyond cruise marketing copy. Visit Greenland’s first Tourism Satellite Account said tourism accounted for 4.9% of Greenland’s gross domestic product and about 1,800 direct jobs in 2024. (traveltrade.visitgreenland.com) Visit Greenland’s 2025 to 2035 strategy says new airports will make the country more connected and that tourism growth has to happen on Greenland’s terms. That puts operators selling “coolcations” into a market that wants more visitors, but also tighter control over how and where they arrive. (traveltrade.visitgreenland.com) For travelers booking summer 2026, the offer is no longer just cooler air. It is cooler air packaged with midnight sun, fjords, Arctic food and small-group wilderness trips that can command higher prices than a standard beach holiday. (travelhx.com) (euronews.com)
