Survey: Banks Ramp Up Tech Spending Amid Security Fears

A new national survey from Integris reveals rising consumer security fears are prompting banks to prepare for larger technology outlays. Bank executives cited AI and cybersecurity as top priorities but also admitted to gaps in tracking the return on their tech investments.

The planned surge in technology spending is a direct response to a significant trust deficit among consumers. According to the Integris report, 40% of customers cite malicious attackers as their primary banking concern. This anxiety is so pronounced that two-thirds of Americans would consider switching banks after a single major data breach. This fear isn't unfounded, as banks are combatting a higher volume of threats than customers realize. In the past year alone, 51% of banking executives reported a significant email-based breach, and 50% experienced a mobile-related breach. The increasing sophistication of threats, including AI-powered scams and deepfake technologies, is creating new vulnerabilities for the financial sector. In response, 45% of bank executives anticipate technology budget increases of 40% or more. Much of this new investment is earmarked for AI-driven solutions. Banks like JPMorgan Chase and Citibank are already using AI to monitor transactions for fraud in real-time, analyze documents, and automate loan processing. Despite these massive outlays, a significant portion of bank leadership is struggling to quantify the impact of their tech spending. 64% of banking executives admit to lacking full visibility into their total IT expenditures due to costs being spread across various departments and legacy systems. This makes it difficult to calculate a clear return on investment, a challenge compounded by the fact that the primary benefit of cybersecurity is loss prevention, which is inherently difficult to measure.
