Russia Intensifies Offensive Along Ukraine Frontline

Russian forces have launched intensified offensives across multiple sectors of the frontline in Ukraine, according to recent assessments. While Ukrainian counteroffensives have reportedly regained some territory, US-mediated peace talks have made little progress. Open-source mapping confirms fluctuating zones of control as both sides appear to be preparing for potential spring escalations.

- Russian forces are focusing their main offensive effort in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the Slovyansk, Kostyantynivka-Druzhkivka, and Pokrovsk directions, while also maintaining pressure in northern Kharkiv Oblast. Their tactics often involve small infiltration groups of two to three soldiers, forgoing the use of heavy military equipment in some areas like Kharkiv. - In the first half of February 2026, Russian forces captured approximately 203 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory, seizing around 12 settlements. This is part of a fluctuating rate of advance that saw them gain 127 square miles between January 20 and February 17, 2026. - Russia has significantly increased its use of drones and guided aerial bombs. In the western Zaporizhia region near Orikhiv, the number of Russian drone strikes has more than doubled, and in the Lyman direction, there's been a notable increase in glide bomb strikes. - In response to the offensive, international partners are bolstering Ukrainian defenses. Sweden recently announced a nearly €1.1 billion military aid package, one of its largest to date, prioritizing air defense systems and long-range weapons. - The European Union has approved a €90 billion support loan package for Ukraine for 2026-2027, which includes €60 billion for military assistance and €30 billion for budget support. - Ukraine has been conducting a long-range strike campaign targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure. Following the lifting of restrictions by the U.S. and UK, Ukraine has used systems like ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles to hit targets up to 300 kilometers inside Russia. - Civilian casualties have risen significantly, with the total number of killed and injured in 2025 being 31% higher than in 2024. The increased use of long-range weapons like missiles and loitering munitions accounted for 35% of these casualties in 2025. - Trilateral negotiations involving Ukrainian, U.S., and Russian representatives took place in Geneva on February 17-18, focusing on military, political, and humanitarian issues. However, there is skepticism about Russia's intentions, with some officials believing the talks are a stalling tactic to buy time for their war effort.
