Palou Dominates IndyCar St. Pete

Alex Palou keeps winning — this time taking the 2026 IndyCar season opener at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Dale Coyne Racing had strong showings while Will Power struggled with Andretti, and Mick Schumacher made headlines with his one-lap debut performance.

Alex Palou's victory at St. Petersburg was a continuation of his commanding 2025 season, where he secured his third-consecutive and fourth overall series championship. The Spaniard's win at the 2026 season opener was his 20th career victory in just 99 starts. His margin of victory, 12.4948 seconds over Scott McLaughlin, was the largest in the history of the St. Petersburg event. The decisive moment for Palou came through an "overcut" pit strategy, staying out two laps longer than his rivals during the first round of stops. This allowed him to emerge with a clear track ahead and control the race, leading 59 of the 100 laps. Dale Coyne Racing showcased surprising speed, with rookie Dennis Hauger qualifying third and veteran Romain Grosjean sixth. In the race, Grosjean secured an eighth-place finish, while Hauger came in tenth, giving the team two top-10 results to start the season. For two-time series champion Will Power, his debut with Andretti Global proved challenging. After 16 consecutive full-time seasons with Team Penske, Power's first race with his new team ended prematurely after he brushed the wall on lap 21. The team made repairs, but he ultimately retired from the race, finishing 22nd. Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher, saw his highly anticipated IndyCar debut end on the first lap. Driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, Schumacher was collected in a multi-car incident in Turn 4, leaving him with nowhere to go. Prior to joining IndyCar, Schumacher competed in Formula One for the Haas team in 2021 and 2022 and served as a reserve driver for Mercedes. The German driver, who also has experience in the FIA World Endurance Championship, expressed that his love for single-seater racing drove his move to the American series. The St. Petersburg race featured only two caution periods for a total of seven laps. The next event on the IndyCar calendar is at Phoenix Raceway, a 1-mile oval, which will be Schumacher's first time competing on an oval.
