Generac is recalling about 149,400 portable generators after federal regulators said some units can leak gasoline during the first fill, creating a fire and burn hazard. (cpsc.gov) The recall was posted April 16, 2026 by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and covers 12 Generac models, including GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500, GP6500E, GP6500EDF, GP6700EDF, GP8000E, GP9200E and GP9500ETF units. (cpsc.gov) The generators were sold nationwide at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Costco and other hardware stores, plus online, from May 2025 through February 2026 for about $600 to $1,300. (cpsc.gov) (nj.com) The problem is tied to the carburetor, the part that mixes fuel and air before the engine starts. Regulators said gasoline can leak from that part when the recalled generators are filled for the first time. (cpsc.gov) The Consumer Product Safety Commission said owners should stop using recalled generators that have never been filled with gasoline. Units that have already been filled enough to move the gauge off “E,” or have been used without leaking, can keep operating while owners arrange a repair. (cpsc.gov) Generac is offering a free repair kit, including shipping, and said owners can check model and serial numbers on the company’s recall page. The company listed the action under recall number M-00000152. (generac.com) (cpsc.gov) Federal regulators said Generac had received 114 reports of fuel leaking from the carburetor, but no injuries had been reported when the recall was announced. About 260 additional units were sold in Canada. (cpsc.gov) The timing lands as homeowners in storm-prone states shop for backup power before summer outages and hurricane season. Anyone buying a portable generator now needs to match the model and serial number before first use. (palmbeachpost.com) (cpsc.gov)
