These visas often come with perks like tax exemptions or reductions, with countries like Croatia and Costa Rica offering a complete exemption from local income tax on foreign earnings. Popular hubs for digital nomads include cities in Thailand, Portugal, and Colombia, which offer a blend of affordable living costs, reliable internet, and established communities. For example, the cost of living for a digital nomad in Chiang Mai, Thailand, can range from $900 to $1,500 per month. The influx of digital nomads can have a significant impact on local economies. While they bring in foreign income and boost demand for services like co-working spaces and short-term rentals, their presence can also lead to challenges such as rising housing costs for local residents. The concept of a "digital nomad" isn't new and was predicted in the 1997 book "Digital Nomad" by Tsugio Makimoto and David Manners. However, the COVID-19 pandemic acted as a major catalyst, accelerating the shift to remote work and making the lifestyle accessible to a much broader segment of the workforce.
