Data Exchange Quality Validated

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has launched its 11th Data Aggregator Validation cohort, led by QMetrics. This reflects a national trend toward more rigorous validation of health data exchange to ensure accuracy for payer and provider collaboration.

- The NCQA's Data Aggregator Validation program, initiated in fall 2019, aims to ensure the integrity of clinical data used for Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) reporting. Validated data can be used as standard supplemental data, which eliminates the need for primary source verification during HEDIS audits, saving time and resources for health plans and providers. - Since its inception, the program has conducted over 100 validations across 44 organizations in 21 states, with QMetrics having validated over 56,000 data sources. The validation process involves a rigorous review of data ingestion, transformation, and output processes to ensure they meet NCQA standards. - For an ICU nurse transitioning to informatics, understanding data quality is crucial as value-based care models rely on accurate data for performance measurement and care coordination. Poor data quality can lead to misdiagnoses, medication errors, and fragmented care, directly impacting patient safety and outcomes. - A common complaint from nurses regarding EHRs is the significant time spent on documentation, with some studies showing acute care nurses spend over 30% of their shift navigating the EHR. EHR optimization projects, like one at UCHealth with their Epic system, have been shown to reduce documentation time for nurses by as much as 18 minutes per 12-hour shift. - To transition into nursing informatics, critical skills include data analysis, familiarity with EHR systems like Epic, and knowledge of healthcare data standards such as HL7 FHIR. Certifications like the Nursing Informatics Certification (NI-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) can validate expertise and improve career prospects. - Interoperability standards like HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) are foundational to modern health IT, enabling the exchange of discrete data elements between different systems, which is more flexible than older document-based standards. The NCQA validation program has evolved to incorporate the use of FHIR to increase access to dependable HEDIS supplemental data. - Frontline ICU nurses frequently report usability issues with EHRs, including redundant data entry, poor workflow navigation, and excessive clicks, which contribute to burnout and job dissatisfaction. An informaticist with ICU experience is well-positioned to help design and optimize systems to address these specific clinical workflow challenges. - Key business skills for informatics nurses include project management, communication with stakeholders at all levels, and negotiation. The role is often a bridge between clinical staff and IT professionals, requiring the ability to translate clinical needs into technical requirements.
