Research Details Geomagnetic Storm Impact on European Grids

A new study in *Scientific Reports* analyzes the parameters of geomagnetic storms from Solar Cycle 24 and their impact on grid vulnerability in Europe. The research highlights the growing need for resilient building systems as the energy transition accelerates. For building systems like lighting, this emphasizes the importance of surge protection and microgrid compatibility.

- Solar Cycle 24, the focus of the study, was the weakest solar cycle in 100 years and lasted from December 2008 to December 2019. Its peak in April 2014 was substantially lower than those of other recent cycles. - Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) are the primary threat, as these quasi-DC currents can flow into high-voltage transformers through grounding connections, causing them to overheat, generate harmonics, and potentially fail. - A historical precedent is the March 1989 storm which caused the collapse of the Hydro-Québec power grid in Canada, leaving six million people without power for nine hours. More recently, a 2003 storm in Sweden led to a blackout in Malmö and damaged a transformer in Southern Sweden. - High-latitude regions like Northern Europe are at an elevated risk because Earth's magnetic field lines converge at the poles, which amplifies the induced currents. However, mid-latitude regions can also be vulnerable depending on the grid's specific topology. - The current Solar Cycle 25, which began in December 2019, has been significantly more active than predicted and is expected to peak in 2025. - In response to these threats, Europe is advancing space weather forecasting through initiatives like the ESA's Vigil satellite mission and the Horizon 2020-funded FLAG project, aiming for an operational early warning system by 2027. - Grid operators are also implementing mitigation strategies, such as installing GIC blockers and updating operational procedures, guided by standards from bodies like the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC).
