The Steelers used the 76th overall pick Friday night to draft Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the third round. (nfl.com) Allar enters a Pittsburgh quarterback room that, at the time of the pick, officially included second-year passer Will Howard and veteran Mason Rudolph. NFL.com reported the team was still waiting on Aaron Rodgers. (nfl.com) The pick was made with a selection Pittsburgh owned from the Dallas Cowboys through the George Pickens trade. The Steelers had 12 total picks in the 2026 draft after receiving four compensatory selections. (steelers.com) Allar started 35 games at Penn State and appeared in 45, finishing his college career with 633 completions, 7,402 passing yards and 61 touchdown passes. (steelers.com) His best season came in 2024, when he completed 262 of 394 passes, a 66.5% rate, for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns. Steelers quarterbacks coach Tom Arth said Allar is 6-foot-5, 235 pounds and “throws it as well as any quarterback in this draft class.” (steelers.com) Penn State’s 2025 season changed his draft arc. NFL.com said Allar played only six games after suffering a broken ankle in a loss to Northwestern, ending a year that had opened with first-round expectations. (nfl.com) His longer résumé still gave Pittsburgh a developmental profile to bet on. The Steelers said Allar left Penn State ranked first in school history in completion percentage and interception percentage, third in touchdown passes and fourth in passing yards. (steelers.com) The selection also tied together Pittsburgh and Penn State in the middle of a draft hosted in Pittsburgh. Joey Porter Sr. and Joey Porter Jr. announced the pick, and Porter Jr. had been Allar’s teammate at Penn State. (steelers.com) (nfl.com) For now, the Steelers added a third-round quarterback with starter size, recent injury questions and time to develop behind veterans. (nfl.com)
