LA Fitness Pilots AI Basketball Courts
LA Fitness is piloting AI-powered basketball courts from Shoot 360 at select West Coast locations, featuring motion tracking sensors and gamified training experiences. The courts provide personalized shooting feedback and immersive analytics for recreational and serious players.
- The technology behind the courts was developed by Shoot 360, a company founded in 2012 by Kirk Hendricks. The concept was born when co-founder Craig Moody noticed his son and his friends were more interested in video games than playing basketball. - The AI-powered system provides real-time feedback on a player's shot, measuring the arc, depth, and alignment. When these three metrics are ideal, the system determines a "Splash Zone," where the probability of making a shot can be as high as 98%. - In addition to shooting analytics, the courts feature a virtual trainer for ball-handling drills and a high-tech passing skill court to improve accuracy, speed, and decision-making. - The pilot program will initially roll out in six LA Fitness locations across Northern California, Oregon, and Washington. The Hillsboro, Oregon location, for instance, is offering a limited number of "Founding Memberships" at a discounted rate. - Three of the new Bay Area courts will be in conjunction with the Golden State Warriors' Golden State Sports Academy and will be located in City Sports Clubs, which are owned by the same parent company as LA Fitness. - Shoot 360's technology is already used for training by players on 29 of the 30 NBA teams. Several professional players, including Trae Young and Breanna Stewart, are investors in the company. - Beyond the LA Fitness pilot, Shoot 360 has over 60 franchise locations across North America, Europe, and Asia and has a goal of expanding to over 500 locations worldwide by 2030.
