BowFlex Dumbbells Recalled After 100+ Injuries

BowFlex 552 Dumbbells have been recalled due to weight plates dislodging during use, resulting in over 100 injuries including concussions and broken toes. The recall affects one of the most popular adjustable dumbbell models used in home gyms. Users should immediately stop using the equipment and contact BowFlex for replacement options.

- This recall affects approximately 3.84 million units of the BowFlex SelectTech 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells. These were sold from as early as 2004 through May 2025 at major retailers like Dick's Sporting Goods, Best Buy, and Costco, as well as online via Amazon.com and Bowflex.com. - The former parent company, BowFlex Inc. (previously Nautilus), had received 337 reports of plates dislodging, which led to 111 injuries including concussions, broken toes, and contusions. The new owner, Johnson Health Tech Trading, has received 12 additional reports of the plates falling off since acquiring the company. - This is not the first recall for this type of product; in 2012, Nautilus recalled about 17,000 BowFlex SelectTech 1090 dumbbells because the weight selector dial could fail, causing plates to fall. - BowFlex Inc. filed for bankruptcy in March 2024, and its assets were later acquired by Johnson Health Tech Trading. This corporate change affects the remedy options for consumers. - Customers who purchased the dumbbells from Johnson Health Tech Trading (after April 22, 2024) are eligible for a full refund or a replacement. Those who bought them from the now-bankrupt Nautilus Inc. will receive a prorated voucher towards new BowFlex products. - Johnson Health Tech Trading has announced it will release new, improved versions of the dumbbells, called the BowFlex Results Series 552 and 1090 SelectTech Dumbbells, which will be offered as a replacement option.
