The conflict stems from decades of tension over Iran's nuclear program and regional influence. In 2018, the US withdrew from the JCPOA, reimposing sanctions and escalating the "maximum pressure" campaign. Initial US-Israeli strikes on February 28th targeted sites in Tehran, Isfahan, and other cities, reportedly killing Supreme Leader Khamenei. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil supplies, with roughly 20 million barrels passing through it daily, about 20% of global oil trade. Closure would impact major exporters like Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and the UAE. Disruption could also affect shipments of LNG, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors. WTI crude oil prices have fluctuated significantly, influenced by factors like US oil price decontrol in 1981 and the shale oil boom in the 2010s. Historically, WTI traded at a premium to Brent crude, but the shale boom reversed this trend. Geopolitical events, like the current conflict, can cause rapid price spikes. Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil producer, has a production capacity of approximately 12.7 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. The company is expanding its gas production capabilities, targeting an 80% increase by 2030. Aramco also has about 2 mmbpd of available production capacity that can be activated quickly.
