Sarkodie Sells Out Royal Albert Hall
Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie made history as the first African rapper to sell out London's 6,315-capacity Royal Albert Hall on Ghana's Independence Day (March 6). The show featured guests like Stormzy, Flavour, and King Promise, with posts about the achievement garnering 5.4k likes and 720 reposts.
This isn't Sarkodie's first time making history overseas. In 2015, he sold out the legendary Apollo Theater in New York for his "History in the Making" concert, a venue renowned for its connection to African-American music legends. That show was a pivotal moment for hiplife, a Ghanaian genre blending hip-hop with highlife music, on the American stage. The choice of the Royal Albert Hall is significant. While the venue has hosted legendary musicians like Adele and Jay-Z, it's more traditionally known for classical music and events like the Proms. For a rapper, and specifically an African rapper, to headline a sold-out show there marks a major cultural moment and a testament to the global reach of Afrobeats and hiplife. The concert was the first time Sarkodie has brought his flagship "Rapperholic" show to the United Kingdom. An annual staple in Ghana since 2012, the concert has become one of the most anticipated musical events in the country, consistently selling out major venues and featuring a mix of top Ghanaian and international artists. The timing of the show on March 6th was a deliberate celebration of Ghana's 69th Independence Day, transforming the concert into a showcase of Ghanaian culture and musical excellence on a global stage. The audience was a sea of red, gold, and green, the colors of the Ghanaian flag, with Sarkodie paying tribute to highlife legend Daddy Lumba during his set. Guest performer Stormzy, a UK rap heavyweight, has deep connections to his Ghanaian heritage. Born Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr. to Ghanaian parents, he has previously collaborated with Ghanaian artists like Yaw Tog and has spoken proudly of his roots, calling Ghana "my home" during his 2022 Global Citizen Festival performance in Accra. Nigerian highlife and Afrobeats star Flavour, known for hits like "Nwa Baby (Ashawo Remix)," brought his energetic stage presence to the Royal Albert Hall. Fellow Ghanaian artist King Promise, a frequent collaborator with Sarkodie, also joined the lineup, performing fan favorites like "Can't Let You Go." During the historic performance, Sarkodie announced his next major UK headline show. He revealed plans for a 2027 concert at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena in London, scheduled for March 6, 2027, to coincide with Ghana's 70th Independence Day.
