Formula E and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile have unveiled the Gen4 race car, the all-electric series’ next chassis for the 2026-27 season. (fiaformulae.com) The car is due to debut in Season 13, with Formula E calling it the fastest machine in the championship’s history. The series said Gen4 adds 50% more power than the Gen3 Evo and introduces permanent all-wheel drive. (fiaformulae.com) Formula E said Gen4 will produce up to 600 kilowatts of power and up to 700 kilowatts of regeneration, the system that turns braking energy back into usable electricity. The championship also said the car can recover about 40% of the energy used in a race through regeneration. (fia.com) Electric race cars work by storing energy in a battery pack and feeding it to motors, then clawing some of that energy back under braking instead of wasting it as heat. Formula E has made that recovery system a central part of its racing format, and Gen4 pushes that idea further than the current car. (fiaformulae.com) The reveal lands as Formula E tries to turn technical upgrades into a bigger selling point for manufacturers and fans. Nissan committed to the Gen4 era in March 2024, followed by Jaguar in April 2024, Lola in June 2024, Maserati in November 2024, and Mahindra in December 2025. (fia.com (fia.com 1) (fia.com 2) (fia.com 3) (fia.com 4)) Formula E and the FIA have framed Gen4 as a technology step aimed at both performance and sustainability. Their launch materials describe nearly 100% motor efficiency and a car built around recycled and recyclable materials. (fia.com) The series has been moving in stages: Gen1 launched Formula E in 2014, Gen2 arrived with the larger battery in 2018, and Gen3 debuted in 2023 before the Gen3 Evo update. Gen4 is the next full redesign rather than a mid-cycle refresh. (fiaformulae.com) Formula E has also started showing teams’ early Gen4 development liveries, including a Jaguar TCS Racing test car on its official site in April 2026. That keeps the new car in public view months before it turns a race lap in the 2026-27 championship. (fiaformulae.com)
