Assassin's Creed Shadows Update Adds Manual Jump

Ubisoft is rolling out update 1.1.8 for *Assassin's Creed Shadows* today, which adds a highly requested manual jump feature. The option, available in Advanced Parkour settings, is intended to improve player mobility and control. The patch also includes improvements to critical hits and various bug fixes, continuing the game's post-launch support nearly a year after its release.

- *Assassin's Creed Shadows* was developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the same studio that led development on *Assassin's Creed Odyssey* and *Syndicate*, two titles that notably simplified parkour mechanics and moved away from the manual control scheme favored in earlier games. - The removal of manual jumping in titles following 2014's *Assassin's Creed Unity* was a deliberate design choice to make traversal more "frictionless." After *Unity*'s buggy launch, subsequent games aimed to simplify controls to prevent players from making accidental, fatal jumps. - This update is particularly relevant for the game's dual protagonists; the agile shinobi, Naoe, is designed for stealth and nimble traversal, while the samurai, Yasuke, is slower, more powerful, and has limited climbing capabilities. The manual jump is expected to primarily enhance Naoe's gameplay. - The shift to large, open-world RPG formats in games like *Origins*, *Odyssey*, and *Valhalla* also influenced the simplification of parkour, as the sprawling, often flat landscapes were less suited to the dense, vertical "parkour playgrounds" of earlier titles. - Ubisoft has explicitly acknowledged the addition of the manual jump is a direct response to fan requests, calling it a "fan favorite feature." To celebrate its inclusion, the company launched a "Parkour Challenge," encouraging players to share videos of their traversal skills using the new mechanic. - Initial sales reports for *Assassin's Creed Shadows* in early 2025 positioned it as the second best-selling game of the year in the US, with player numbers surpassing *Origins* and *Odyssey* in the same timeframe. However, a later analysis in late 2025 suggested the game sold 4.3 million copies in seven months, trailing behind the sales of *Mirage* and *Valhalla*.
