'Shadowlands' Trailer Drops

The current *Shadowlands* production at the Aldwych Theatre, running until May 9, 2026, stars Hugh Bonneville as C.S. Lewis and Maggie Siff as Joy Davidman. Rachel Kavanaugh directs this revival of William Nicholson's play. *Shadowlands* depicts the real-life relationship between C.S. Lewis, Oxford scholar and author of *The Chronicles of Narnia*, and Joy Davidman, an American poet. Their initial correspondence in 1950 evolved into a marriage of convenience that later blossomed into love. The play explores themes of love, loss, faith, and grief in a compelling way. William Nicholson adapted *Shadowlands* from his own 1985 BAFTA Award-winning BBC television film. The play premiered in 1989 and has had successful runs in the West End and on Broadway, even winning the Evening Standard Award for Best Play. A film adaptation starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger was released in 1993 and won a BAFTA Award. This production originated at the Chichester Festival Theatre and has a running time of 2 hours and 20 minutes, including an interval. Critics have praised Bonneville and Siff's performances, highlighting the play's emotional impact and its balance of humor and heartbreak. The play is recommended for ages 12+.
