Caribbean Luxury Gets Bold Upgrade

The Caribbean is evolving beyond sun and sand into a luxury powerhouse, according to a new Jamaica Observer feature. The region is positioning itself as a haven for restorative escapes with exclusive resorts, personalized service, and bespoke leisure experiences. This reflects a broader trend toward high-end hospitality that emphasizes immersive natural beauty over traditional beach tourism.

This shift is underpinned by significant investment, with brands like Aman building its third Caribbean property, Amancaya, a $260 million resort in The Bahamas. This follows the success of its resorts in the Dominican Republic and Turks and Caicos. The Dominican Republic saw an 8.7% increase in tourism in January 2026, while Aruba experienced a 9.4% jump in the same period. Major hospitality brands are expanding their Caribbean footprint with a focus on "barefoot luxury." Nobu Hospitality, co-founded by Robert De Niro, is opening the Nobu Beach Inn in Barbuda in late 2026, a project 30 years in the making for De Niro. This resort will feature 36 bedrooms across 17 villas, alongside 25 private beachfront residences starting at $12 million. New properties are catering to a demand for privacy and unique experiences. Six Senses recently debuted its first Caribbean resort in a secluded cove in Grenada, offering experiences like waterfall meditation and artisan rum making. In Jamaica, the new $700 million Moon Palace The Grand in Montego Bay will feature overwater bungalows and is expected to create over 3,000 local jobs. The trend extends to established resorts as well, with St. Lucia's Sugar Beach completing a $100 million renovation. The definition of luxury is evolving, with a growing preference for private villas and intimate, low-density retreats over large, crowded resorts. In the Dominican Republic, luxury travelers are now spending 40% more on personalized experiences that connect them with local communities.
