Lake Ice Warning Signals Spring Swimming

They feed warmer water up from the bottom, thinning the ice from below where it's not visible. This can create weak spots even when the surrounding ice appears solid and thick. Clear, blue ice is the strongest, while white or "snow ice" has about half the strength. For safety, a minimum of 4 inches of new, clear ice is recommended for activities on foot like ice fishing. A snowmobile or ATV may require 5-7 inches, and a small car or pickup needs 8-12 inches of solid ice. However, these are just guidelines, and ice is never 100% safe. While some lakes are still frozen, others are teeming with life. Poso Lake in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, is the third-deepest lake in the country and a hub of fishing activity.
