Boeing Reports Supply Chain Improvements

Boeing has reported significant gains in the quality of its supply chain. The announcement is part of an effort to reassure investors and airline customers about its manufacturing integrity following a period of intense industry scrutiny.

- According to Ihssane Mounir, Boeing's Senior Vice President for Global Supply Chain, the company now spends 40% less time addressing problems related to its supply chain compared to 2024. - Defects from key supplier Spirit AeroSystems, which manufactures fuselages for the 737, have reportedly decreased by 60% since Boeing implemented enhanced quality control inspections. - The improvements follow intense scrutiny from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which imposed production caps on the 737 MAX after a door plug, manufactured and installed by Spirit AeroSystems, failed mid-flight on an Alaska Airlines aircraft in early 2024. - In a strategic move to gain more control over its manufacturing process, Boeing reacquired Spirit AeroSystems in December 2025; the supplier was originally a part of Boeing before being sold off in 2005. - The FAA has significantly increased its oversight of Boeing, with more safety inspectors on-site at manufacturing facilities and audits that have uncovered instances of non-compliance. An FAA audit completed in February 2026 found 97 instances of noncompliance. - Despite the reported gains, Boeing's production has been hobbled by these quality issues, impacting its ability to ramp up jetliner production following the COVID-19 pandemic. - The intense focus on quality and safety comes after a federal watchdog report criticized the FAA's oversight of Boeing's production facilities as not being comprehensive enough to identify key issues. - Shareholder lawsuits have been filed against Spirit AeroSystems, alleging that the company concealed widespread and sustained quality failures from investors, including debris in products and missing fasteners.
