Suburban Condo Building Partially Collapses

A condo building in Chicago's north suburbs has suffered a partial collapse, displacing residents and prompting an investigation into the structure's integrity. Authorities are on the scene assessing the damage and determining the cause.

The Morton Grove condo building that suffered a partial collapse is the Coventree Condos, located at 5935 Lincoln Avenue. The five-story building was constructed in the late 1970s and contains over 30 units. Real estate listings from various years indicate the building was built between 1977 and 1981. The collapse originated from a failed column or support beam in the basement parking garage. This failure caused the floors above to drop by approximately two to three inches, which resulted in the jamming of residents' doors and trapping some inside their units. More than 50 residents were displaced from the building following the incident. Firefighters, with nine different departments responding, had to rescue some individuals from their balconies. No injuries were reported, and some residents were temporarily sheltered in ambulances to stay warm. The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced residents with temporary housing and other essentials. The building will remain closed until it is deemed structurally sound by inspectors. A past real estate listing from 2014 indicated that the property was managed by Cagan Management.
