India is set to open the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway on April 14, putting the two cities about 2.5 hours apart by road. (moneycontrol.com) The access-controlled corridor is about 210 kilometers long, and recent reports say Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate it on Monday, April 14, 2026. Older official reporting put the project cost at about ₹11,868.6 crore, while current coverage rounds it to roughly ₹12,000 crore to ₹13,000 crore. (moneycontrol.com) (hindustantimes.com) The route starts near Akshardham in Delhi and runs through Uttar Pradesh districts including Baghpat, Baraut, Shamli and Saharanpur before reaching Dehradun. Reports on the launch say the road is designed for speeds up to 100 kilometers an hour. (hindustantimes.com) (financialexpress.com) The expressway is part of a broader push to move traffic off older, slower highways linking Delhi with Uttarakhand. Recent coverage says the shorter drive could also reshape weekend travel, tourism and freight movement into Dehradun, Haridwar and nearby hill routes. (indiatoday.in) (indianexpress.com) A big part of the project sits in sensitive forest terrain near Rajaji National Park, where road building has long raised concerns about blocking elephant and other animal movement. The government said in 2022 that the last 20-kilometer stretch would include a 12-kilometer elevated wildlife corridor and the 340-meter Daat Kali tunnel to reduce that disruption. (pib.gov.in) Days before the opening, the National Highways Authority of India and the Wildlife Institute of India released a study saying camera traps had recorded animals using the underpasses below the corridor. The Press Information Bureau said the report documented 18 species, including elephants, leopards, deer and golden jackals. (pib.gov.in) (indianexpress.com) The opening also comes after repeated delays. A November 2025 report in Hindustan Times said the road had missed earlier targets, including December 2024 and October 2025, before officials shifted the expected public opening to February 2026. (hindustantimes.com) If the April 14 launch proceeds as scheduled, the test for the new road will be simple and immediate: whether drivers actually get a reliable half-day trip down to a long morning or afternoon run.
