Michelin map expands — with surprises

- Michelin released new regional coverage that includes a Great Lakes edition but notably excludes Cincinnati. - The expansion covers Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, and Milwaukee, while Manila & Cebu got their own 2026 pocket guide. - Reporters say city inclusion sometimes depends on tourism partnerships, and the Philippines launch and hotel expansions were announced alongside the guide news (travel.yahoo.com) (philippine-embassy.org.sg) (travelandtourworld.com) (zawya.com).

Michelin has redrawn part of its map again, adding a new American Great Lakes edition for 2027 — but Cincinnati is not on it. (guide.michelin.com) Michelin announced the Great Lakes guide on April 7, saying its inspectors are already dining anonymously in six cities: Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. The first restaurant selection will be revealed in 2027. (guide.michelin.com) The omission stood out in Ohio because Cleveland made the cut while Cincinnati did not. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported April 23 that city inclusion can turn on tourism-board deals as much as dining reputation, and Michelin said its partnerships are for “marketing and promotional efforts primarily.” (cincinnati.com) (savornation.tv) That funding model is not theoretical. Fox 9 reported Minneapolis’ tourism district is paying $250,000 a year for three years, while Savor Nation reported Indianapolis and Milwaukee are each contributing $150,000 annually for three years. (fox9.com) (savornation.tv) Michelin’s expansion is not limited to the U.S. In the Philippines, Michelin unveiled its first 2026 Manila & Environs–Cebu selection on October 30, 2025, with 108 establishments: 1 two-star, 8 one-star, 25 Bib Gourmand and 74 Michelin Selected restaurants. (michelin.com) On April 22, the Philippine Embassy in Singapore said that launch now also has a pocket guidebook for Manila, surrounding areas and Cebu, tied to Filipino Food Month promotions. The embassy said the print guide is meant for travelers and food-focused visitors. (philippine-embassy.org.sg) The guide news is landing alongside a broader tourism push. Visit Dubai says Dubai Restaurant Week will run May 1-17, 2026, with lunch menus priced at 125 dirhams and dinner menus at 250 dirhams across more than 125 restaurants. (visitdubai.com) In the Philippines, The Lind Hotels says it is expanding beyond Boracay, with Coron slated for 2026 and Siargao to follow. The company is leaning on the visibility of The Lind Boracay, which travel outlets have described as Boracay’s only Michelin Guide-listed hotel. (thelindhotels.com) (traveldailymedia.com) The immediate result is a Michelin map that now reflects not just where inspectors eat, but where tourism agencies and hospitality groups are investing to be seen. For cities left outside the line — including Cincinnati — the question is no longer only who can cook at Michelin level, but who gets onto Michelin’s route. (guide.michelin.com) (cincinnati.com)
