OpenClaw Dethrones React on GitHub

OpenClaw was created by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, who recently announced he will be joining OpenAI. The project is now set to move to an open-source foundation to ensure its continued development and independence. The project was originally launched in November 2025 as "Clawdbot" before being renamed "Moltbot" in January 2026 after a trademark complaint from AI company Anthropic. It was renamed again to OpenClaw just three days later. Its explosive growth was partly fueled by the viral popularity of Moltbook, a social networking service designed for use by AI agents like OpenClaw. This symbiotic relationship rapidly increased interest and adoption within the developer community. To put its rapid ascent in perspective, it took React thirteen years to accumulate over 240,000 stars. OpenClaw achieved a similar milestone in just over three months, signaling a major shift in the open-source community's attention toward AI-native tools. Unlike chat-focused AIs, OpenClaw is an open-source framework for building autonomous agents that execute tasks across multiple applications like Slack, Telegram, and WhatsApp. Written primarily in TypeScript, it runs on a user's own devices and is designed to act, not just respond. The emphasis on secure credential support is critical for enterprise adoption, as AI agents require access to sensitive API keys and tokens. Proper secrets management, including the use of encrypted, short-lived keys, mitigates the risk of security breaches as AI systems become more integrated into business workflows. For developers, contributing to a high-velocity project like OpenClaw is a significant portfolio differentiator. Meaningful contributions to a large, relevant codebase used by major companies are often valued more by FAANG recruiters than multiple smaller, independent demo projects.
