The US Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) market is seeing substantial growth due to increasing cyber threats and evolving regulatory mandates. This approach shifts away from traditional perimeter-based security, assuming that threats exist both inside and outside the network. Zero Trust requires continuous verification of every user, device, and application attempting to access resources. The Department of Defense (DoD) has mandated a target Zero Trust architecture for all defense components by fiscal year 2027. This mandate is a response to the inadequacy of traditional security against sophisticated threat actors. The DoD Zero Trust Strategy, released in 2022, marks a fundamental shift requiring continuous verification of every access request. The DoD Zero Trust framework is built on tenets such as assuming a hostile environment and breach, and the principle of "never trust, always verify". It is also built upon seven interlocking pillars: Users, Devices, Network/Environment, Applications and Workload, Data, Visibility and Analytics, and Automation and Orchestration. These pillars ensure comprehensive security across diverse environments. Executive Order 14028 and OMB Memo M-22-09 established zero trust requirements for all federal agencies, with strict deadlines. NIST SP 800-207 formally defines zero-trust principles and architecture, influencing requirements in GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI DSS. CISA's Zero Trust Maturity Model assists agencies in implementing ZTA.
