Teyana Taylor Explains Music Exit

R&B star Teyana Taylor has publicly discussed her decision to step away from the music industry, citing a lack of support and recognition from her label as the tipping point. Taylor explained her departure was not due to lack of passion but feeling underappreciated and "overlooked" despite her work ethic and artistry.

The initial announcement came in December 2020, when Taylor posted her year-end Spotify streaming numbers, which included an impressive 162.8 million streams. Despite these numbers, she expressed feeling "super unappreciated as an artist, receiving little to no real push from the 'machine,' constantly getting the shorter end of the stick, being overlooked." Her frustrations were largely tied to her third studio project, "The Album," released in June 2020. Although the 23-track album debuted in the top ten of the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, Taylor felt her label, Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music, provided almost no promotional support. This followed similar frustrations with her previous, Kanye-produced album "K.T.S.E.," where she felt excluded from key decisions. Taylor later clarified her exit was for her mental and emotional health, stating she didn't want to "move another inch for a company" that didn't see or hear her. She emphasized that it wasn't a permanent retirement but rather putting her music career "on ice" until she could be released from her contract with Def Jam. Pivoting from music, Taylor focused on acting and directing, a move some in her circle called "dumb." She established The Aunties Production studio and earned critical acclaim for her starring role in the 2023 film "A Thousand and One," which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Her success in Hollywood proved to be a turning point, with roles in films like "Coming 2 America" and "One Battle After Another," the latter earning her a 2026 Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She is also preparing to direct her first feature-length film, "Get Lite." In 2025, Taylor made her official return to music with the visual album "Escape Room." The project was well-received, earning a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album in 2026, solidifying her successful return on her own terms.
