Reddit Seeks Adtech to Monetize User Data
Reddit is reportedly looking to acquire adtech firms to better monetize its vast trove of first-party user data. The move signals a push to build more sophisticated, targeted advertising by leveraging user conversations and interests, replicating the data-driven models of TikTok and Instagram.
This acquisition strategy is fueled by significant financial momentum, with Reddit's advertising revenue surging 75% year-over-year to $690 million in Q4 2025. The company's total revenue for the quarter hit $726 million, a 70% increase from the previous year, leading to a net income of $252 million. CFO Andrew Vollero described the approach as a "tuck-in first" strategy, aiming to buy proven technologies to shorten development time by six to twelve months. This follows previous acquisitions like Memorable AI for creative optimization, Spiketrap for contextual ad targeting, and MeaningCloud for text analytics, which have already bolstered its ad stack. The push comes as the value of first-party data skyrockets with the decline of third-party cookies. Reddit's data is particularly valuable because it's derived from user conversations and self-organized communities ("subreddits"), providing high-intent signals based on specific interests and topics. Currently, Reddit's ad platform offers a significant cost advantage over competitors. In late 2024, the average cost per thousand impressions (CPM) on Reddit was approximately $2.29, compared to $11.73 on Meta, while its cost-per-click (CPC) was around $0.59 versus Meta's $1.33. This monetization effort is built on a growing user base of 121.4 million daily active users, a 19% year-over-year increase. International growth is particularly strong, with daily active users outside the U.S. jumping 28%, driving a 78% increase in international revenue. AI is central to this strategy, with existing AI-powered targeting and delivery systems already credited for driving recent revenue growth. Future acquisitions are expected to focus on AI tooling for creative performance, sentiment analysis for better targeting, and technology that shortens the path from user conversation to ad conversion. The goal is to transition from a niche community to a mainstream global advertising platform. By acquiring adtech, Reddit aims to increase its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), which recently surged 42% globally, and compete more directly with established giants in the digital ad market.
