Apple Delays Smart Home Display

Apple postponed its smart home display launch until at least September 2026. The delay is due to ongoing work on Siri, which Apple wants to power the device with advanced generative AI. This AI integration is intended to help Apple compete with Amazon’s Echo Show and Google Nest Hub.

Apple's smart home display, codenamed J490, has faced repeated delays, initially slated for Spring 2025 and then March 2026. The primary bottleneck is reportedly the development of a revamped Siri, considered crucial for the device's functionality and user experience. Apple aims to align the launch with the iPhone 18 release in September 2026, showcasing a unified AI experience across devices. The device is expected to feature a 7-inch screen, resembling a square iPad, with options for speaker base placement or wall mounting. Facial recognition is also anticipated, enabling personalized information display such as calendars and reminders. Apple's broader AI strategy involves integrating the upgraded Siri into various products, including smart glasses and AirPods. Amazon currently dominates the U.S. smart speaker market with a 65-67% share, while Google Nest holds 17-27%. Apple's HomePod has a smaller footprint, estimated at 15-21%, appealing primarily to iOS users with its high-quality audio. The U.S. smart speaker market was valued at $5.79 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $10.86 billion by 2032. Apple is also exploring the use of generative AI to accelerate its chip design processes. An Apple executive noted generative AI's potential to significantly boost productivity in electronic design automation (EDA). This mirrors a broader trend, with companies like Cadence and Synopsys integrating AI into their EDA platforms.
