Verstappen Slams New F1 Cars
Max Verstappen vented frustration with new-era F1 cars at the Australian GP, saying they "lack fun," energy management is too rigid, and onboard cameras show poor handling. He's calling for formula changes as Mercedes marked 500 Grands Prix for engineer Bernd with "then and now" nostalgia.
The new Formula 1 cars, introduced at the start of the 2026 season, have drawn sharp criticism from drivers due to a radical shift in engine regulations. The power units now mandate a nearly 50/50 split between the internal combustion engine and electrical power. This increased reliance on battery energy requires significant "lift and coast" driving techniques to recharge, a stark contrast to the flat-out driving drivers are accustomed to. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen has been particularly vocal, stating he is "absolutely not happy" and that the driving is "not fun at all." He has likened the experience to "Formula E on steroids," arguing that the constant energy management has very little to do with traditional racing and has left him feeling "emotionally drained." The technical changes for 2026 are among the most significant in the sport's recent history. In addition to the new power units, the cars are smaller, lighter, and feature active aerodynamics to help manage energy. The ground-effect aerodynamics that defined the previous era have been abandoned in favor of flat floors, which has altered the cars' handling characteristics. Other top drivers, including Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton, have echoed Verstappen's concerns. Norris described the new cars as having gone from the "best to the worst," citing the complex energy management as a primary issue that makes the driving feel unnatural. Amid the controversy over the new cars, the Australian Grand Prix marked a significant milestone for a paddock stalwart. Bernd Mayländer, the official driver of the F1 Safety Car, celebrated his 500th Grand Prix in the role. The German former DTM driver has been leading the field in his Mercedes-AMG since the 2000 season.
