De La Soul Honors Trugoy Legacy

De La Soul delivered an emotional Tiny Desk Concert celebrating their hip-hop legacy while honoring late member Trugoy the Dove. The set featured classics and new material, marking a poignant moment as the group continues shaping the genre even after Trugoy's passing. Meanwhile, social media is buzzing over Duquesa's viral Tiny Desk Brasil performance of "Dois Mundos" — written at age 17 — with the clip hitting 7.9K views and sparking debates about female rappers dominating.

The passing of David Jolicoeur, known as Trugoy the Dove, at age 54 was due to congestive heart failure, a condition he had been battling for several years. His death on February 12, 2023, came just before a major milestone for the group. For decades, De La Soul's classic albums were absent from streaming services due to complex sample clearance issues and disputes with their former label, Tommy Boy Records. After the label was acquired by Reservoir Media in 2021, a deal was finally reached to release their first six albums. Tragically, the group's back catalog, including seminal works like "3 Feet High and Rising," became available on all streaming platforms on March 3, 2023, just weeks after Trugoy's death. The date also marked the 34th anniversary of their debut album's release. De La Soul was part of the influential Native Tongues collective, which included A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah, known for their positive and Afrocentric lyrics. Their innovative and playful approach to sampling on their 1989 debut, "3 Feet High and Rising," is considered a landmark in hip-hop. In 2015, the group demonstrated their dedicated fanbase by launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new album. They surpassed their initial goal of $110,000, raising over $600,000 from more than 11,000 backers. Meanwhile, Duquesa, an R&B and trap artist from Feira de Santana, Bahia, has been gaining recognition in the Brazilian rap scene. Her viral Tiny Desk performance of "Dois Mundos," a song she wrote at 17, has amplified conversations around the rising influence of female artists in the genre.
