OPEC+ May Boost Oil Output Amid War

As the Middle East conflict intensifies, OPEC+ is reportedly considering a larger-than-planned oil output boost. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are already moving to increase exports, aiming to stabilize volatile markets and offset potential supply disruptions from Iran. The group faces a delicate balance between managing prices and ensuring adequate global supply.

The decision came from a core group of eight OPEC+ members, including Saudi Arabia and Russia, who agreed to a "production adjustment" of 206,000 barrels per day (bpd) starting in April. This represents a slight acceleration of previously planned increases, which had been paused for the first quarter of 2026 due to seasonal demand weakness. This output boost is overshadowed by a severe logistical crisis: the Strait of Hormuz, the artery for nearly a quarter of the world's seaborne oil, has been effectively shut down. Iran's Revolutionary Guards reportedly warned ships that the passage was closed, bringing tanker traffic to a standstill. While key producers like Saudi Arabia and the UAE hold the majority of OPEC+'s estimated 4.5 million bpd of spare capacity, that oil is now considered "stranded." The production increase is largely symbolic if the crude cannot be shipped from the Gulf. Analysts warn the modest production hike will do little to calm markets, where the focus has shifted from production targets to transit risk. Brent crude futures had already jumped to over $72 a barrel on Friday, a seven-month high, and some analysts predict prices could top $100 if the Hormuz disruption is prolonged. Saudi Arabia has the option to divert some exports via its East-West pipeline to the Red Sea, but this route cannot fully compensate for a blocked Hormuz and faces its own security threats. The group of eight oil-producing nations is now shifting to "day-by-day market monitoring" in light of the rapidly evolving conflict. They are scheduled to meet again on April 5, 2026, to reassess the volatile situation.
