Milwaukee's emergence follows a trend of Midwestern cities gaining culinary recognition. In 2025, Minneapolis' Bûcheron won "Best New Restaurant" and St. Paul's Karyn Tomlinson was named "Best Midwest Chef". The James Beard Awards are considered among the highest honors in the restaurant industry. The awards, established in 1990, celebrate a range of dining experiences and have a code of ethics regarding employee treatment. The James Beard Foundation also emphasizes equity, community, and sustainability. Milwaukee chefs have won the "Best Chef: Midwest" award several times, including Justin Aprahamian of Sanford in 2014, Adam Siegel in 2008, and Sandy D'Amato in 1996. Dane Baldwin of The Diplomat won the same award in 2022. Milwaukee's culinary scene is experiencing a "flavor era," with new restaurants opening and established ones expanding. Recent openings include Āya, Cassis, and JoSa on the River. This growth comes despite some restaurant closures in 2025.
