A luxurious nine-bedroom, 18-bathroom mansion built on the site of the 1969 Sharon Tate murders in Los Angeles is now listed for rent at $247,500 per month. The property at 3301 Crawford Street in Benedict Canyon replaced the original Tate-Polanski residence, which was demolished in 1994 after standing vacant for years. The new estate spans 13,000 square feet on 3.4 acres, featuring a home theater, wine cellar, gym, and infinity pool overlooking the Los Angeles skyline. On August 8-9, 1969, members of Charles Manson's "Family" cult killed actress Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant, along with four others: Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, and Steven Parent. Tate, 26, was the wife of director Roman Polanski, who was in Europe at the time. The next night, the killers murdered Leno and Rosemary LaBianca nearby. Manson, a musician and cult leader, directed the attacks to ignite a race war he called "Helter Skelter," inspired by the Beatles song. Four Family members—Charles "Tex" Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Leslie van Houten—were convicted of murder in 1971. Manson died in prison in 2017. The original 3,200-square-foot home was designed by architect Aaron Green in 1941 and bought by Rudi Altobelli in 1960. Tate and Polanski rented it starting in February 1969. After the murders, it sold for $85,000 in 1973 to Julio Peña, who lived there until 1989. Peña demolished the house in 1994 for $145,000, citing its trauma as a "house of evil." Developer Jeff Lee acquired the lot in 1997 and built the current mansion, completed around 2000. Lee sold it in 2010 for $12 million to entrepreneur Dan Garrett. Garrett listed the property multiple times: $65 million in 2016 (expired), $52.5 million in 2018 (withdrawn). In 2020, he rented it to reality TV producer Ryan Murphy for $120,000/month during COVID lockdowns. It's now back on the rental market via Westside Estate Agency. The listing highlights the estate's luxury—11 fireplaces, 1,000-bottle wine cellar, two spas—without mentioning the murder history, though photos show the pool where Tate's body was found. Realtor.com pulled the listing briefly after backlash but reposted it. True crime enthusiasts and gawkers have long visited the site, drawn by its Manson lore. Nike co-founder Phil Knight bought nearby property in 2020 partly to block public access. Some celebs, like Colleen Haskell, rented it in the 1990s despite the stigma. Rental terms require a one-year minimum lease, $500,000 security deposit, and proof of $5 million liability insurance. The listing agent, Kurt Rappaport of Westside Estate Agency, declined comment on the history's impact. As of May 14, 2026, the property remains available.
