NCPDP Partners with ViVE on Rx Data

The National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) has partnered with the ViVE 2026 event. The collaboration aims to advance industry discussions and initiatives related to prescription data standards.

- The NCPDP SCRIPT standard, which will be a focus of the ViVE partnership, is the technical backbone for e-prescribing and is directly integrated into Epic EHR systems for sending new prescriptions, managing renewal responses, and processing prior authorizations using versions like 10.6, 2017071, and 2023011. - For an ICU nurse moving into informatics, understanding these standards is critical for projects that optimize nursing workflows, as poorly designed e-prescribing interfaces in the EHR are a common source of frustration, leading to errors like incorrect drug selection from dropdown menus or missing information. - A key role for a nurse informaticist is to act as a bridge between clinicians and IT, ensuring that the implementation of standards like NCPDP SCRIPT within Epic actually improves patient safety and efficiency, addressing issues like duplicate e-prescriptions or confusing user interfaces. - The ViVE 2026 event will feature specific programming for informaticists, including sessions on interoperability, AI-driven analytics, and peer-led discussions by organizations like CHIME, offering direct learning opportunities for nurses transitioning into health IT. - Transitioning from an ICU role to nursing informatics often involves obtaining a board certification in nursing informatics (RN-BC) from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), which typically requires a BSN, two years of RN experience, and specific practice or educational hours in informatics. - Frustrations that frontline nurses experience with EHRs, such as alerts for drug interactions that are not clinically relevant or cumbersome processes for documenting medication administration, are key areas where a nurse informaticist can apply their clinical experience to improve system design. - Federal mandates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) require the use of specific NCPDP SCRIPT versions for all Medicare Part D e-prescriptions, making compliance a major driver for health IT projects that informatics nurses will likely be involved in. - An understanding of data standards extends beyond prescriptions; nurse informaticists also work with terminologies like SNOMED CT for clinical documentation and LOINC for lab results to ensure data can be exchanged and analyzed meaningfully across different systems.
