NFL Free Agency Day 1 Chaos

NFL free agency exploded with major moves on Day 1. Arizona Cardinals signed WR Kendrick Bourne to a 2-year deal, while Indianapolis made massive moves — added EDGE Arden Key (2 years/$20M), retained WR Alec Pierce (4 years/$114M), traded WR Michael Pittman Jr. to Pittsburgh, and lost EDGE Kwity Paye to Las Vegas. Early grades have Raiders and Rams earning top marks.

The Colts' decision to trade Michael Pittman Jr. was a direct result of their massive four-year, $116 million extension for fellow wide receiver Alec Pierce. This significant investment in Pierce, who set career highs with 47 catches for 1,003 yards last season, made Pittman and his contract expendable. The Steelers acquired Pittman for a late-round pick swap and promptly signed him to a three-year, $59 million extension. For the Raiders, the addition of Kwity Paye on a three-year, $48 million deal with $32 million guaranteed was a necessary move after trading away star defensive end Maxx Crosby. While not a direct replacement for the Pro Bowl edge rusher, Paye brings five years of starting experience from the Colts, where he accumulated 30.5 sacks after being a first-round pick in 2021. The Las Vegas Raiders earned high marks for their aggressive start to free agency, using their significant salary cap space to address major needs. A key move was signing top center Tyler Linderbaum to a three-year, $81 million contract, making him the highest-paid center in the league and providing a crucial anchor for their offensive line. The Los Angeles Rams also received positive early grades for their work in rebuilding their secondary. After a season where their cornerback room was a significant weakness, they made a splash by trading for and extending Trent McDuffie and then signing his former Chiefs teammate, Jaylen Watson, to a three-year, $51 million deal. Kendrick Bourne's departure from New England lands him in Arizona on a two-year contract. The veteran receiver is coming off a 2023 season where he recorded 37 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns in eight games before suffering a torn ACL. Indianapolis' addition of Arden Key on a two-year, $20 million deal with $11 million guaranteed provides a veteran presence to their pass rush. Key, who will be 30, has recorded 16.5 sacks over the past three seasons with the division-rival Titans and joins his third AFC South team.
