Markets Tumble on War & Inflation Fears

Wall Street slumped Friday, with the Dow falling 1.1% and the S&P 500 down 0.4%, rattled by the new conflict in Iran and stubborn inflation data. Oil prices surged on the geopolitical news, while analysts also cited growing unease about the disruptive potential of AI.

The latest sell-off was intensified by a hotter-than-expected Producer Price Index (PPI) report for January. The core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, jumped 0.8%, more than double what economists had forecasted. This surge in wholesale prices signals that inflationary pressures are not subsiding as quickly as hoped, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve's decisions on interest rates. Adding to inflation woes, global oil prices have hit a six-month high. Brent crude, the international benchmark, settled around $72.8 per barrel, an increase of over 2.6% on Friday. The price spike is directly linked to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, with analysts warning that a significant supply disruption could push prices toward $80 per barrel. Over 20% of the world's crude oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint now in a conflict zone. The technology sector, particularly AI-related stocks, also faced a significant downturn. Investor anxiety is growing around the massive capital expenditures required for AI development and whether those investments will yield sustainable returns. This "sell now, ask questions later" mindset has led to sharp sell-offs in software and other tech industries perceived as vulnerable to AI disruption. In a classic flight to safety, investors are moving capital into traditional safe-haven assets. Gold prices surged, climbing nearly 11% in February to trade above $5,296 per ounce. U.S. Treasury yields have remained relatively stable as investors seek the security of government bonds amidst the equity market volatility.
