Oxfordshire Band Wins Welsh Contest
A local Oxfordshire band has won a £1,300 first prize at a music contest in Wales. The victory, which also included individual awards for band members, highlights the strength of the local music scene.
The victorious group, Wantage Silver Band, claimed their first Welsh Open title with a performance program titled "States of Mind!". The win was a significant achievement, as they prevented the defending champions, Ebbw Valley Brass, from securing a fourth consecutive victory. The band's musical director, Chris King, crafted the winning program, which included his own composition, "Brainstorm!". The performance was praised by the adjudicator for its "noble musical intentions" combined with excellent technical control. In addition to the main prize, Wantage Silver Band also received the award for 'Most Entertaining Stage Presentation'. Two of their members received individual accolades: Russell Jackson was named 'Best Cornet' for his performance of Piazzolla's 'Oblivion', and Imogen Fewster won 'Best Baritone'. Wantage Silver Band is a registered charity based in Oxfordshire that has been making music since 1972. The organization is a large community of over 200 musicians, featuring multiple bands for different skill levels, from beginners to the top-tier "A" Band which competes in the Championship Section of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.
