LA Tech Networking Events This Month

Two key networking events are happening in Los Angeles for aspiring engineers. Cloud Native Days Los Angeles is taking place today, March 5, focusing on cloud and AI architecture. A broader Community Employment Day Job Fair is scheduled for March 19, connecting candidates with local startups in tech, healthcare, and fintech.

Cloud Native Days are global, community-run events that grew out of the Kubernetes Community Days and are supported by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). The LA event includes workshops and talks on key tools for building and managing scalable applications, such as Kubernetes, Docker, serverless architectures, and CI/CD pipelines. This focus on cloud-native systems is critical, as proficiency in platforms like AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud is a top requirement for ML engineering roles. The broader Community Employment Day job fairs are organized by City Career Fair and have a 20-year history of connecting diverse candidates with major corporations and government agencies. Past national sponsors have included tech giants like Microsoft, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin, alongside major players in healthcare and finance such as Cedars Sinai, Kaiser Permanente, and E*Trade. These events typically draw between 500 and 1,100 candidates. Los Angeles/Orange County is the fourth-largest market for AI talent in North America, with a workforce of 13,605 AI specialists. The region's tech talent pool grew by 13% between 2018 and 2023, and it awarded the second-highest number of tech degrees in 2022, with 14,467 graduates. This growth is reflected in salaries, with the average tech wage increasing 23% over the same five-year period. For aspiring ML engineers, technical skills in Python, SQL, and Java remain foundational, with Python appearing in 85% of relevant job postings. Expertise in ML frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow is also essential, mentioned in 39.8% and 37.5% of listings, respectively. Building a portfolio that showcases the ability to design data pipelines and deploy models using these tools is a key differentiator for entry-level candidates. The LA startup scene offers growing opportunities in fintech and health-tech. Companies like Scratch Financial are applying AI to patient lending, while others like Serif Health are building healthcare price intelligence APIs. These local firms provide valuable opportunities to work on real-world applications of machine learning in high-growth sectors.
