Medvedev Eyes First Title Defense
Daniil Medvedev defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-2, 6-4 in the Dubai semifinals, ending the Canadian's hot February streak. Medvedev is now one win away from his first successful title defense in an ATP 500 final — something he has never accomplished before in his career.
A title defense has remained an elusive milestone in Daniil Medvedev's otherwise stellar career. Of his 20 ATP Tour titles, none have been won at the same event twice, a peculiar statistic for a player who has reached the world No. 1 ranking and won a Grand Slam. This attempt in Dubai marked another chance to break that unique streak. Medvedev had previously come close to a successful title defense at the 2021 ATP Finals and the 2021 Paris Masters, falling in the final on both occasions. Félix Auger-Aliassime entered the semifinal with an impressive 11-1 record in February. The Canadian was aiming for his third consecutive tour-level final after a victory in Montpellier and a runner-up finish in Rotterdam. Despite Auger-Aliassime's recent success, Medvedev dominated their semifinal matchup, winning 88 percent of his first-serve points and breaking the Canadian three times to secure the straight-sets victory. In the final, Medvedev faced Ugo Humbert of France. Humbert defeated Alexander Bublik to claim the Dubai title, preventing Medvedev from capturing his first-ever title defense. Humbert's victory marked his sixth career ATP Tour singles title in as many finals.
