Epic Gets Deeper Operational Integration

Operational awareness platform Userful is launching a deeper integration with Epic. The company's Infinity Platform will pull clinical and operational data into unified dashboards, aiming to give hospital teams real-time situational awareness and reduce information silos in acute care environments.

The Userful Infinity Platform's deeper integration with Epic utilizes secure OAuth2 protocols to maintain persistent, authenticated sessions. This allows for the continuous, real-time visualization of clinical data, such as admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT) information, moving beyond static screenshots or session-dependent displays. The platform consolidates data from multiple sources, including enterprise BI, surveillance feeds, and operational data, into a single, software-defined architecture. This move toward unified, real-time data visualization is critical in acute care, where fragmented information can delay treatment. For ICU nurses, common frustrations with EHRs include excessive documentation leading to burnout, redundant data entry, and poor workflow navigation. A significant portion of nurses report that EHR workflow inhibits the efficiency and quality of patient care, with issues like slow system response and unplanned downtime being major contributors to dissatisfaction. This integration supports compliance with federal mandates like the 21st Century Cures Act, which requires increased data interoperability and prohibits information blocking to ensure patients and providers have access to electronic health information. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has established rules to enforce these provisions, pushing health IT developers to adopt standardized APIs, often leveraging HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources). For an ICU nurse transitioning to informatics, understanding these interoperability standards is crucial. FHIR uses modern web technologies to define a standard for exchanging healthcare information, making it easier for different systems to communicate. This facilitates the kind of seamless data flow that platforms like Userful aim to provide. Memorial Hermann, which recently completed its transition to Epic across all its hospitals and care sites, relies on this level of integration to create a unified patient record and improve care coordination. To pivot from critical care to nursing informatics, certifications like the Nursing Informatics Certification (NI-BC) from the ANCC are highly valued. Employers also seek practical experience with EHR systems, data analysis, and quality improvement projects. An ICU nurse's clinical expertise is a significant asset, as it provides the necessary context to optimize systems for frontline staff—a perspective often missing in purely technical teams.
