ByteDance Launches New Video Chat App

TikTok parent ByteDance has launched a new video chat app in China, signaling a continued push into real-time social products. The move intensifies competition in the synchronous social space, focusing on personalized engagement for a new generation of users.

This foray into real-time social products is not ByteDance's first attempt to challenge the dominance of Tencent's WeChat. The company has a history of launching and sunsetting social apps, providing a case study in market entry and competition. These ventures highlight a persistent strategy to leverage their massive user base from apps like Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok) for new product adoption. In 2019, ByteDance launched "Feiliao," or Flipchat in English, an instant messenger designed to build communities around shared interests. The app combined traditional chat features with forum-like discussions, aiming to differentiate itself from the all-encompassing WeChat. That same year, the company also released "Duoshan," a video-messaging app akin to Snapchat, directly trying to leverage the user habits of its short-form video audience. Despite initial hype, these earlier social products struggled to gain a significant foothold against WeChat's network effect, which boasts over a billion monthly active users. Feiliao was eventually taken offline in 2021 as ByteDance consolidated its operations and shifted focus away from non-core businesses. Duoshan also saw a significant drop in downloads after its initial launch. The competitive landscape in China's social and video market is intense. While short-form video apps have surpassed a billion users, the market is showing signs of saturation. Tencent remains a formidable competitor, not just with WeChat, but also with its significant presence in long-form video and music streaming. ByteDance's strength lies in its AI-powered content recommendation, the core of TikTok and news aggregator Toutiao. The company's latest advancements, like the AI video model Seedance 2.0, showcase a continued focus on cutting-edge content creation tools. This expertise in AI and user engagement will be a critical factor in any new social product's ability to personalize user experiences and carve out a niche.
