Tatum Returns Strong in Celtics Win
Jayson Tatum scored 15 points in his return from Achilles surgery as Boston beat Dallas 120-100. Tatum started rough but found his groove, calling it a "really good step" toward full form. The win keeps Boston firmly in the Eastern Conference race with their star player back on court.
Jayson Tatum’s return to the court came 298 days after he ruptured his right Achilles tendon in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks in May 2025. The typical recovery for such an injury can be nine to 12 months, but Tatum's progress was notably quicker. In his comeback game, Tatum logged 27 minutes, contributing 15 points along with 12 rebounds and seven assists. Despite the final stat line, he started the game missing his first six shots, showing some initial rust after the long layoff. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla spoke about the significance of the moment, saying, "you saw a guy at his most vulnerable state, and you’re seeing that journey back." He also expressed gratitude for being part of Tatum's story. Tatum himself admitted to moments of doubt and crying during his rehabilitation, but said returning to play with his family and teammates in the crowd was "everything I ever dreamed of." In Tatum's absence, fellow Celtics star Jaylen Brown has elevated his game, averaging career highs in points (29.1), rebounds (7.1), and assists (4.9), and has entered the league MVP conversation. Before Tatum's return, the Celtics had compiled a strong 41-21 record, keeping them in second place in the Eastern Conference standings. The victory against the struggling Dallas Mavericks, who have now lost six straight games, improves Boston's record as they integrate their star player back with 19 games remaining in the regular season.
