AI and Robotics to Modernize Shipbuilding

Shipbuilder HII and Path Robotics are partnering to advance shipbuilding with "Physical AI." The companies are holding a ceremony on February 11 to sign a memorandum of understanding and demonstrate the technology. The collaboration aims to apply AI and robotics to improve efficiency and reduce costs in the shipbuilding process.

- Path Robotics specializes in autonomous welding systems that use artificial intelligence and computer vision, allowing them to adapt to variations in parts without the need for manual reprogramming. This is a key advantage in shipbuilding, which traditionally lacks the highly repetitive tasks suited for conventional robotics. - The collaboration aims to directly address the manufacturing industry's persistent shortage of skilled welders. Path Robotics' technology is designed to handle complex welds that are difficult to automate and can achieve a first-pass success rate of nearly 99%. - This partnership aligns with a broader push for shipyard modernization by the U.S. Navy, which has faced production backlogs and is investing heavily in programs like the 20-year, $21 billion Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP).
