Michigan Basketball Loses Key Player

USC leading scorer Chad Baker-Mazara is no longer with the program, a significant blow as conference tournaments approach. Meanwhile, Michigan suffered another setback with backup point guard L.J. Kaysen tearing his ACL, per college basketball insider Jon Rothstein.

For Michigan, the loss of backup point guard L.J. Cason to a torn ACL is a significant blow to their backcourt depth. The sophomore suffered the season-ending injury in the Big Ten regular-season championship-clinching 84-70 victory over Illinois. Cason was a key contributor off the bench, averaging 8.4 points and hitting over 40% of his three-point attempts. The injury to Cason occurred late in the first half against Illinois when he appeared to slip after a steal and a pass. He briefly returned in the second half and made a basket before going down again, not to return. This now likely forces Michigan, a national title contender with a 27-2 record, into an eight-man rotation as they head into the postseason. USC's situation with leading scorer Chad Baker-Mazara is more complex. His departure was not solely due to the hard fall he took in the 82-67 loss to Nebraska. The dismissal was the result of an "accumulation of issues," according to a person familiar with the situation. This was the fifth collegiate stop for the 26-year-old Baker-Mazara, who previously played for Duquesne, San Diego State, Northwest Florida State, and Auburn. His departure leaves a significant void, as he was averaging 18.6 points per game and was the team's best free-throw and three-point shooter. The Trojans are in a precarious position, having lost five consecutive games and now holding an 18-11 overall record and a 7-11 mark in Big Ten play. Their hopes for an NCAA Tournament bid are fading, and they likely need to win their remaining regular-season games and make a deep run in the Big Ten tournament to have a chance. The dismissal of Baker-Mazara is the second time this season USC has lost a leading scorer, after Rodney Rice's season-ending shoulder injury. The team's depth is being severely tested as they face a crucial final stretch of the season.
