Nancy Guthrie Case Takes New Turn
The Nancy Guthrie disappearance investigation shifted focus this week as fresh surveillance clues sparked new leads and the sheriff confirmed targeting a "secondary market" in the hunt for her masked abductor. DNA found on a glove was traced to a restaurant worker and ruled unrelated, narrowing the field of relevant evidence. The family continues offering a $1 million reward as the case surpasses the one-month mark.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, relies on daily medication for a heart condition and has a pacemaker. Her pacemaker's app disconnected from her phone at 2:28 a.m. on the morning she was reported missing, approximately 40 minutes after her doorbell camera was disabled by a masked individual. The armed suspect seen in doorbell footage tampering with the camera at 1:47 a.m. was wearing a black Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack. Investigators now believe this backpack may have been purchased on a secondary market, like eBay, rather than a major retailer like Walmart as initially suspected. Multiple ransom notes were sent to media outlets demanding payment in cryptocurrency, with one note setting a deadline that has since passed. The FBI has stated it is taking these communications "seriously." A California man was arrested for allegedly sending a fake ransom demand to the family. A law enforcement source has indicated that the masked individual seen in the doorbell footage may have been to Guthrie's home prior to the night of the abduction. Bloodstains found on her front porch were confirmed to be hers. The investigation is a multi-agency effort involving the Pima County Sheriff's Department, the FBI, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Authorities have cleared Guthrie's family, including her daughter, "Today" show anchor Savannah Guthrie, of any involvement in the disappearance. A former FBI agent has suggested the suspect seen in surveillance footage may have had an accomplice. The theory is based on the analysis of a handheld device, believed to be a two-way radio, that the suspect was carrying.
