LA Startup Raises $2.75M for Snail Mail Social Network
LA-based startup Escargot just raised $2.75M to build a social network based on snail mail. The company, co-founded by a former Disney Channel star and an ex-Apple engineer, presents a classic "0 to 1" case study in cross-functional execution and betting on a counter-intuitive product thesis.
The $2.75M seed round was co-led by Wischoff Ventures and Hannah Grey, with participation from South Park Commons, Common Magic, and Next Wave. The company aims to build infrastructure for meaningful, physical gestures, arguing that the tech industry's focus on speed has made genuine communication more difficult. Co-founders and cousins Andrew Gold and Aaron Albert are betting on a generational shift where those raised on digital interactions find novelty in physical items. Gold, the CEO, previously worked as an engineer at Apple and Coinbase, while CMO Aaron Albert is a former Disney Channel actor who later founded and sold a mental health startup. Escargot's platform functions as a two-sided marketplace, connecting over 300 independent artists with users who want to send physical cards. The company handles the printing, postage, and mailing, allowing a card to be sent from a phone in about 60 seconds. The product's pricing model includes individual cards for approximately $8 or a subscription starting at around $10 per month for two card credits that can be rolled over. This strategy targets a U.S. greeting card market estimated to be worth $7.1 billion by 2025. While not positioning itself as an AI-first company, Escargot uses AI to enhance the user experience. Features include allowing users to remix card art with Google's Gemini and an app that can suggest optimal times to send cards by accessing user calendars and contacts. The company's long-term vision extends beyond greeting cards to become a full platform for "thoughtfulness and celebration." Future plans involve expanding into gifted experiences, personalized stationery, and other physical touchpoints to bridge digital convenience with real-world connection.
