Primary Bedroom Popcorn Removal

A new One Room Challenge update documents tackling popcorn drywall removal in a primary bedroom renovation. The post shares process details and tips for handling this messy but rewarding job. Good timing as spring renovation season kicks off.

Popcorn ceilings, also known as acoustic or stipple ceilings, gained popularity in residential construction from the 1950s through the 1980s. They were favored by builders as a quick and inexpensive method to finish ceilings, effectively hiding imperfections and providing sound-dampening qualities. The textured effect was created by spraying on a material containing particles like polystyrene or vermiculite. However, in many applications before the 1980s, these mixtures also contained asbestos to increase fire resistance and durability. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) banned the use of asbestos in spray-on ceiling materials in 1978 due to health concerns. However, the ban allowed builders to use their existing inventories, meaning that homes built as late as the mid-1980s could still have asbestos-containing popcorn ceilings. Disturbing asbestos-containing ceilings through scraping, sanding, or other renovation activities can release microscopic fibers into the air. Inhaling these fibers is linked to serious health risks, including lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma. Professional removal of a non-asbestos popcorn ceiling typically costs between $1 and $6 per square foot. If asbestos is present, the cost for professional abatement can be significantly higher, ranging from $5 to $20 per square foot. Removing outdated popcorn ceilings can be a worthwhile investment for homeowners. The project can modernize a home's appearance and may offer a return on investment of over 80%, making the property more attractive to potential buyers and potentially increasing its resale value.
